If you spend a lot of time on the road, sooner or later, you're going to wish you had a way to have some tunes while you travel. Having music on my rides, particularly those long jaunts to the Laughlin River Run or Sturgis makes the time more enjoyable and easier on the mind (if not the posterior.)
I experimented with a couple of solutions, from helmets with built in speakers, speakers you can add to your helmet to just wearing earplugs. None of these solutions was very satisfactory - motorcycle riding is dangerous enough without removing one of your five senses. In addition, each of these solutions had no truly convenient way to adjust volume while you're motoring down the road.
One solution is a fairing. I'm not a fan of fairings. I live in Fontana where the Santa Ana winds can push you into the next lane in a heartbeat and a fairing acts like a sail to catch that wind. Also, by the time you buy a fairing, and the soundsystem to put into it, you're looking at a lot of money. Plus, I love the naked road-warrior look of a lean bike with 18" ape hangers! But that's just me.
Fortunately I stumbled across the Kuryakyn Sound of Chrome speakers. These are more than just speakers; they have a built-in 50 watt amplifier. The speakers are full stereo and directional. With a little experimentation, you can point them directly at your head and get a great stereo sound, even at freeway speeds.
I've read where others using these speakers stop hearing them after about 65 MPH. I agree that at speed, the windscream (coupled with my Vance and Hines pipes) drown out a lot of music. But, personally, I'm getting enough sound to still enjoy my tunes and my ride. The volume control is easily adjustable with a large knob located on top of one of the speakers, which I recommend you install next to your clutch hand.
The Sound of Chrome kit comes with everything you need to install the full system. While it's possible to install the system without taking your bike apart, I waited until I had an excuse to remove the tank and was able to do a really clean install.
For the record, what you get is:
- 3" Chrome weatherproof speakers.
- Built-in 50-watt amplifier
- Split clamp handlebar mounting design for easy installation.
- 1" or 1-1/4" mounting clamp (Handlebar size)
- Installation instructions
- 1 year manufacturers warranty
- Works with iPods, MP3's, Satellite Radio, CD players, or anything with a 3.5mm earphone jack.
I love these speakers and my riding experience is a lot more fun. I recommend them to anyone who wants a soundtrack for their adventures on the road.
